The USS Squalus (SS-192) was a S-class submarine commissioned in 1939, known for a tragic incident in 1939 when it sank after a valve failure during a test dive off the coast of New Hampshire. A daring rescue effort using the McCann Rescue Chamber saved 33 survivors, one of these survivors was our grandfather Robert L. Washburn Sr.
